Your child comes home, says the lesson made total sense, and three days later can't remember a word of it. That's not laziness or a bad memory. It's one of the most reliable findings in the whole of psychology, and it has a name.
What the forgetting curve is
In the 1880s a psychologist called Hermann Ebbinghaus spent years memorising lists and testing himself over time. He found that forgetting isn't steady, it's a steep drop. We lose a large chunk of new information within the first day or two, then the decline slows. Plotted on a graph it makes a swooping curve: the forgetting curve.
Learning something once and never returning to it is like pouring water into a bucket with a hole in the bottom. The lesson going in isn't the problem. The leak is.
Why re-reading doesn't plug the leak
The instinct is to re-read notes, and it feels like it's working because the material looks familiar. But recognising something on the page isn't the same as being able to produceit in an exam. Familiarity is a trap: it convinces you you've learned something when you've only learned to recognise it.
Two things flatten the curve
1. Retrieval, not review
Every time you close the book and pull an answer out of your own head, you strengthen that memory far more than another read-through ever could. Struggling to recall something, and then getting it, is the moment learning actually happens.
2. Spacing the reviews
Here's the clever part. Each time you successfully retrieve a fact, the curve resets flatter, you forget more slowly next time. Come back to a topic after a day, then a few days, then a week, and each visit takes less effort while the memory lasts longer. This is spaced repetition, and it's the closest thing revision has to a cheat code.
The catch: doing this by hand is a nightmare
Spaced retrieval works, but organising it yourself is genuinely hard. You'd need a bank of questions, a schedule tracking when each topic is due, and the discipline to actually test yourself instead of re-reading.
